Scientific classification
Genus:
Castilleja
Species:
latifolia

The Castilleja latifolia is a special plant often called the Monterey Indian paintbrush. It gets its name because its bright flowers look a bit like a paintbrush dipped in colorful paint!

This plant is endemic to a small area. This means it grows naturally only along the coastline of California. You can find it between the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey County. Its home stretches from places like Point Reyes all the way down to Big Sur. It loves living right by the ocean, often found in sandy dunes and areas with coastal sage scrub.

What Does the Monterey Indian Paintbrush Look Like?

This beautiful wildflower is a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years. It can grow up to about 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) tall. As it gets older, it spreads out and starts to look more like a small bush.

The plant can be a bit prickly and hairy. Its leaves and stems might be green, gray-green, or even have a purple tint. The leaves are thick and fleshy. They are usually rounded or oval and can be up to 2 centimeters (less than an inch) long.

Its Colorful Flowers

The plant's flowers grow in a special cluster called an inflorescence. This cluster has layers of green leaf-like parts called bracts. The tips of these bracts are very colorful! They can be dull or super bright shades of red, orange, or yellow. The actual flowers often have similar colors to these bright bracts.

After the flowers bloom, the plant produces a fruit. This fruit is a small case called a capsule. It can be up to 2 centimeters long.
