The Montes de León are a group of mountains in north-western Spain. Their name means "mountains of León" in Spanish, named after the old Kingdom of León. These mountains are found in the provinces of León, Zamora, and Ourense. They connect the Cantabrian Mountains with the Macizo Galaico, also known as the Galician Massif. In winter, the tops of these mountains are often covered with snow, making them look very beautiful.

Discovering the Montes de León

The Montes de León are an important part of the geography of north-western Spain. They act like a natural border between different areas. These mountains are not as tall as some other ranges in Spain, but they are still very impressive. They offer amazing views and are home to many different plants and animals.

Where are the Montes de León?

These mountains are located where two other large mountain systems meet. They are a link between the Cantabrian Mountains to the east and the Galician Massif to the west. This special location means they share features from both areas. The mountains stretch across three Spanish provinces, making them a significant regional landmark.

Tallest Peaks of the Range

The highest point in the Montes de León is a mountain called Teleno. It stands at 2,188 metres (7,178 ft) (about 7,178 feet) tall. Teleno is a famous peak in the region and is often seen covered in snow during the colder months.

Other important mountains in this range include:

  • Cabeza de la Yegua, which is 2,142 metres (7,028 ft) (about 7,028 feet) high.
  • Peña Trevinca, reaching 2,124 metres (6,969 ft) (about 6,969 feet).
  • Vizcodillo, standing at 2,121 metres (6,959 ft) (about 6,959 feet).

These peaks are popular for hiking and offer incredible views of the surrounding landscapes.

Subranges of the Montes de León

The Montes de León also have smaller mountain groups within them. One of these is the Sierra de la Cabrera. A "sierra" is a Spanish word for a mountain range, often with jagged peaks that look like a saw. The Sierra de la Cabrera is an important part of the Montes de León, adding to its diverse landscape.
