A Look Back: Montgomery's History
Montgomery began as a small community around 1870. Several farmers moved to the area before the railroad arrived the next year. In 1871, the community was simply known as "the Station."
When the farmers wanted to officially map out their community, they went to Hillsdale. The county clerk, William Montgomery, offered to record their map for free. In return, he asked them to name the new community after him. The farmers agreed!
On December 20, 1871, Montgomery got its own post office. The community officially became an incorporated village in 1906.
