Montgomery-Cuninghame baronets facts for kids
A baronetcy is like a special title of honor that can be passed down through a family. It's a bit like being a knight, but the title is inherited. The Cuninghame of Corsehill baronetcy was created a long time ago, in 1672. It was given to Alexander Cuninghame of Corsehill, who was a Scottish landowner. He was also a distant relative of the 4th Earl of Glencairn, a very important noble family. Later, the family added the name Montgomery to their surname.

Sir John Cuninghame believes he should also hold the title of Earl of Glencairn. However, his family's past attempts to claim this title were not successful because they couldn't provide enough proof. The Earldom of Glencairn was passed down through a different family line after the 15th Earl died in 1796.
In 2010, Sir John asked the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, to recognize him as the Chief of the Name and Arms of Cunningham. The Lord Lyon is the official who deals with coats of arms and family chiefs in Scotland. In 2013, Sir John was officially recognized as the Chief of the House of Cunninghame. This means he is the first Chief of this family in over 200 years!
Currently, there is no direct male heir to the baronetcy of Corsehill. However, the title of Chief of the House of Cunninghame can be passed down through female family members.
