History of Montrose
Montrose was started in 1871. Its growth was helped by the building of a railroad nearby. The city got its name from a town called Montrose in Scotland. A post office has been open in Montrose since 1870.
When Montrose was first established, it had many different businesses. There was a flour mill, places to store grain, a bank, and even two hotels. You could also find hardware stores, furniture shops, and places to buy dry goods. The town had blacksmiths, barber shops, and even two newspapers.
The Montrose Savings Bank opened its doors on June 5, 1895. It was an important part of the community for many years.
Two special buildings in Montrose are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the C.M. and Vina Clark House and the St. Ludger Catholic Church. They are important because they show the history of the area.
