Montuenga Castle is an old castle located in the province of Soria, Spain. It was built to help defend the area around the Jalón River. This river valley was an important natural path between the central plateau of Spain and the Ebro river basin.

The castle sits high up on a steep, long hill. From this spot, it could watch over the nearby village of Montuenga de Soria. Today, you can still see parts of the castle. These include two towers at each end, connected by walls.

Where is Montuenga Castle?

Montuenga Castle is found in the province of Soria, Spain. It is about 105 kilometers (about 65 miles) from the city of Madrid.

The village of Montuenga de Soria is part of a larger area called the municipality of Arcos de Jalon. The main town of Arcos de Jalon is about 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) away.

Why Was the Castle Important?

The castle's high position meant it could control who came and went between two important kingdoms: Castile and Aragon. Because of its location, the area around the castle was often involved in disagreements and battles. One major conflict was the Castilian Civil War. During this war, controlling places like Montuenga Castle was very important for armies.
