Monty Brown's Football Journey
College Football Highlights
Monty Brown went to Ferris State University in Michigan. There, he was an amazing linebacker for the Ferris State Bulldogs team. He broke and set many defensive records! Monty was the first athlete from Ferris State to be named both a first-team Academic All-American (meaning he was great at school and sports) and a first-team All-American.
In 1992, he was one of the top five finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is given to the best player in NCAA Division II football. He was also named co-player of the year in his conference. In his final year, Monty was chosen as the Most Valuable Player for the Ferris State Bulldogs. He was even named the C.M. Frank National Defensive Player of the Year. Because of his incredible achievements, he was added to the Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
Playing for the Buffalo Bills
After college, Monty Brown joined the Buffalo Bills football team on May 6, 1993. He wasn't chosen in the 1993 NFL draft, but the Bills signed him anyway. In his first year, he played in 13 games and made 3 tackles. He also played in two playoff games as the Bills made it to Super Bowl XXVIII. However, they lost that game to the Dallas Cowboys.
In 1994, Monty only played in 3 games before he got injured. He was placed on injured reserve in November of that year.
The 1995 season was a big one for Monty. He played in all 16 games and started 6 of them. He made 69 tackles that year! He also played in two playoff games, starting both, and made 10 tackles. After this season, he became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.
Time with the New England Patriots
On April 17, 1996, Monty Brown signed with the New England Patriots. He quickly became a starter as a right outside linebacker. Monty said one reason he joined the Patriots was to be closer to the World Wrestling Federation headquarters in Connecticut.
He played in 11 games for the Patriots in 1996, starting 7, and made 34 tackles. Unfortunately, he was placed on injured reserve again in December 1996. The Patriots released him in August 1997. His football career ended because of an ankle injury. After that, he decided to train to become a professional wrestler.
Monty Brown's Wrestling Career
Starting Out in Wrestling (2000-2002)
Monty Brown learned how to wrestle from Dan "the Beast" Severn and Sabu. He had his first wrestling match in 2000. He started his career in a league called All World Wrestling League in Michigan. During this time, he even teamed up with another wrestler named Chris Sabin.
First Appearances in TNA (2002)
In 2002, Monty Brown wrestled a few times for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). He even challenged the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ron Killings. However, he didn't become a regular part of the company at that time. His last appearance with TNA in 2002 was on August 28.
Independent Wrestling (2002-2004)
After his first run with TNA, Monty Brown went back to wrestling for smaller, independent companies in Michigan and Southern Ontario. In 2004, he also wrestled a couple of times for Juggalo Championship Wrestling.
Returning to TNA (2004-2006)
Joining Planet Jarrett (2004–2005)
Monty Brown came back to TNA on March 10, 2004. He attacked a wrestling group called the Insane Clown Posse during a match. He now had a new wrestling character, acting like he was from the Serengeti. He wore leopard and tiger-print shorts and moved like an African predatory animal.
At a big TNA event called Final Resolution, Monty Brown won a special match against Kevin Nash and Diamond Dallas Page. This win meant he would get a chance to wrestle for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Even though fans really liked him, Monty was set to lose the match against the champion, Jeff Jarrett.
Two months later, Monty Brown changed his character to become a "heel" (a bad guy in wrestling). This happened at the Destination X event. He attacked Diamond Dallas Page to help Jeff Jarrett keep his championship. Soon after, Monty joined a group called Planet Jarrett. He spent several months wrestling against Jarrett's enemies, including Kevin Nash, Sean Waltman, Diamond Dallas Page, and AJ Styles.
Later that year, he started teaming with another Planet Jarrett member, Kip James. They tried to convince a wrestler named B.G. James to reform his old tag team with Kip. At an event called Sacrifice, Monty and Kip faced Ron Killings and Konnan. B.G. James was the special guest referee. B.G. ended up helping Konnan and Killings win, which cost Monty and Kip the match. After this loss, Monty said he should be the leader of their team. On August 26, he turned against Jarrett, saying their agreement was over.
Chasing the NWA World Title (2005–2006)
At Unbreakable on September 11, Monty Brown announced he wanted to challenge for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship at Bound For Glory. After beating Lance Hoyt at Bound For Glory, Monty took part in a big "Gauntlet for the Gold" match. This match was to decide who would get the next shot at the championship. However, Monty eliminated himself from the match by throwing both himself and Jeff Hardy over the top rope at the same time.
Monty did win a chance for the championship at Genesis in November, by beating Jeff Hardy in a singles match. After a disagreement with a new wrestler named Christian Cage, Monty agreed to put his championship shot on the line in a match against Cage at Turning Point in December. He lost the match to Cage, losing his chance at the title.
On the December 17 episode of Impact!, Monty Brown teamed up with Jeff Jarrett again. Both of them were upset with TNA management in the storyline. On January 7, 2006, Jarrett and Brown made fun of Sting, who had recently joined TNA. Sting and Christian Cage were set to team up against Brown and Jarrett at Final Resolution. Sting and Cage won that match.
After Christian Cage won the World Heavyweight Title, Monty Brown got another chance at the title at Destination X, but he didn't win. After Destination X, Monty had surgery on his knee. He returned to wrestling on April 29, 2006, in Germany. He came back to TNA television on May 18, where he asked to be included in the "King of the Mountain" match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship at Slammiversary in June. He didn't qualify for that match. After that, he had short rivalries with Rhino and Samoa Joe before his TNA contract ended, and he left the company.
World Wrestling Entertainment (2006–2007)
On November 16, 2006, World Wrestling Entertainment announced that Monty Brown had signed a contract with them. He made his debut for their ECW brand on January 16, 2007. He was called "the Alpha Male" Marquis Cor Von. He won his first match against Cassidy Riley. The name change was reportedly because WWE wanted a name they could legally own. A week later, his first name was changed slightly to Marcus.
On the January 23 episode of ECW, Marcus Cor Von defeated Wes Adams. Soon after his debut, he became part of a new wrestling group called The New Breed. On February 6, Cor Von defeated Balls Mahoney. He and Kevin Thorn defeated Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman a week later. On February 27, Cor Von, Elijah Burke, and Kevin Thorn defeated Rob Van Dam, Tommy Dreamer, and Sandman.
The New Breed had a big rivalry with the "ECW Originals" (older ECW wrestlers). This rivalry ended in an 8-man tag team match at WrestleMania 23, where The New Breed lost.
Marcus Cor Von wrestled his last match on the June 19 episode of ECW. It was a tournament match for the vacant ECW World Championship against CM Punk. Cor Von lost this match. In late June 2007, Cor Von took several months off for "family issues." After three months, WWE announced on September 19, 2007, that Cor Von was released from his contract. He did not return to television. After being released, Marcus Cor Von officially retired from professional wrestling.
Life Outside the Ring
Monty Brown went to Bridgeport High School. He played basketball there for three years. During his early wrestling career, Monty also ran his own t-shirt company to earn extra money. After leaving WWE and retiring from wrestling, Monty started working on a line of athletic clothes called "Scripture Clothing." As of 2011, Monty Brown works as a personal trainer in his home state of Michigan.
In Video Games
Monty Brown, as Marcus Cor Von, is a character you can play in the video game WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008. This was his last appearance with the company, as he retired in September 2007, two months before the game came out.
