Montaque "Monty" Brown (born April 13, 1970) is a retired American athlete. He was a professional wrestler and a NFL player. In wrestling, he was known for his time with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). He used his real name there. Later, he joined World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) on the ECW brand. There, he was known as Marquis Cor Von and then Marcus Cor Von. In both companies, he had the nickname "the Alpha Male". As a football player, he played for the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII.

Monty Brown's Football Career

College Football

Monty Brown went to Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He was a star linebacker for the Ferris State Bulldogs team. He set many defensive records there.

Brown was the first Ferris State athlete to be named both an Academic All-American and a first-team All-American. This means he was excellent in both sports and studies. In 1992, he was a national finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy. This award goes to the best player in NCAA Division II football. He was also named co-player of the year in his conference. In his final year, Brown was the Most Valuable Player for the Bulldogs. He also won the C.M. Frank National Defensive Player of the Year award. In 2009, he was added to the Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame.

Playing for the Buffalo Bills

After college, Monty Brown joined the Buffalo Bills on May 6, 1993. He was not chosen in the NFL draft, but the Bills signed him anyway. In his first year, he played in 13 games and made 3 tackles. He also played in 2 playoff games. The Bills made it to Super Bowl XXVIII, but they lost to the Dallas Cowboys.

In 1994, he played in only 3 games. He was then placed on "injured reserve" on November 30, 1994. This means he was hurt and could not play for a while.

In 1995, Brown played in all 16 games and started 6 of them. He made 69 tackles that season. He also played in 2 playoff games, starting both, and made 10 tackles. After this season, he became a "free agent". This means his contract ended, and he could sign with any team.

Playing for the New England Patriots

On April 17, 1996, Brown signed with the New England Patriots. He quickly became a starter as a right outside linebacker. Brown said he wanted to be closer to the World Wrestling Federation headquarters. This company is in Stamford, Connecticut.

He played in 11 games for the Patriots in 1996. He started 7 of those games and made 34 tackles. On December 3, 1996, he was placed on injured reserve again. The Patriots released him on August 19, 1997. His football career ended because of an ankle injury. After this, he decided to become a professional wrestler.

Monty Brown's Wrestling Career

Starting Out (2000-2002)

Monty Brown learned to wrestle from Dan "the Beast" Severn and Sabu. He had his first wrestling match in 2000. He started in Michigan's All World Wrestling League. He even wrestled against his trainer, Sabu. During this time, he also teamed up with Chris Sabin.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2002)

Early Matches (2002)

In 2002, Brown wrestled a few times for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). He even challenged NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ron Killings. But he did not become a regular part of the company. His good-guy character, called a "face" in wrestling, did not connect well with the fans. His last match with TNA in 2002 was on August 28. For a while in 2003, he wrestled for other companies.

Independent Wrestling (2002-2004)

Brown went back to wrestling for smaller, independent companies. He wrestled in Michigan and for Border City Wrestling in Canada. In 2004, he also wrestled a couple of times for Juggalo Championship Wrestling.

Back to TNA (2004-2006)

Planet Jarrett (2004–2005)

He returned to TNA on March 10, 2004. He attacked the Insane Clown Posse during a match. His new wrestling character was from the Serengeti. He wore leopard and tiger-print shorts. He acted like an African predatory animal.

At TNA Final Resolution, Brown won a special match. This win meant he would get a chance to fight for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Even though fans really liked him, Brown lost the championship match.

Two months later, Brown changed his character to a "heel". This means he became a bad guy in the wrestling storyline. He attacked another wrestler to help Jeff Jarrett keep his championship. Brown then joined a group called Planet Jarrett. This group, called a "stable", fought against Jarrett's enemies.

Later that year, he started teaming with Kip James. They tried to get another wrestler to rejoin an old tag team. Brown and James lost a match where a special referee was involved. After this loss, Brown said he should lead the team. On August 26, he turned against Jarrett. He said their agreement was broken.

Chasing the NWA World Heavyweight Title (2005–2006)

At Unbreakable on September 11, Brown said he wanted to challenge for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. He won a match at Bound For Glory. Then he was in a "Gauntlet for the Gold" match. This match was to decide who would get the next championship shot. Brown took himself and another wrestler out of the match at the same time.

He did win a chance for the championship at Genesis in November. He won a singles match against Jeff Hardy. After a fight with a new wrestler named Christian Cage, Brown agreed to put his championship shot on the line. He wrestled Cage at Turning Point in December. He lost the match, so he lost his chance at the title.

On December 17, Brown teamed up with Jarrett again. They were both angry at TNA management in the storyline, which is called "kayfabe" in wrestling. At Final Resolution, Brown and Jarrett lost to Sting and Christian Cage. After Christian Cage won the World Heavyweight Title, Brown got another chance at Destination X. But he did not win the title.

After Destination X, Brown had knee surgery. He returned to wrestling on April 29, 2006. He asked to be in a special match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. He did not qualify for that match. He then had short rivalries with Rhino and Samoa Joe. His TNA contract ended, and he left the company.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2006–2007)

On November 16, 2006, World Wrestling Entertainment announced they had signed Monty Brown. He started on their ECW brand on January 16, 2007. He was called "the Alpha Male" Marquis Cor Von. The company changed his name so they could trademark it. A week later, his first name was changed to Marcus.

Soon after his debut, he joined a new group called The New Breed. This group had a rivalry, or "feud", with another group called the ECW Originals. Cor Von and his teammates won several matches. Their feud ended at WrestleMania 23, where The New Breed lost.

Cor Von continued to wrestle for ECW. He had his last match on June 19. He lost a tournament match for the ECW World Championship. In late June 2007, Cor Von took time off for "family issues". After three months, WWE announced on September 19, 2007, that Cor Von was released. He then officially retired from professional wrestling.

Monty Brown's Personal Life

Brown went to Bridgeport High School. He played basketball there for three years. He is good friends with his coach, Jimmy Sanders. When he first started wrestling, Brown also ran his own t-shirt company to earn money.
