Monument Valley High School is a public high school located in Kayenta, Arizona. It is the only high school managed by the Kayenta Unified School District.

The school first opened its doors in the mid-1950s. Its first group of students graduated in 1962. The original school building was designed in a circle, like a traditional hogan (a type of Navajo home). It had a basketball court in the middle, surrounded by classrooms.

Sadly, the original building burned down in 1978. A new school building was built in its place later that same year.

Monument Valley High School is well-known for its sports teams. They have won many state championships in the AIA 3A Division.

School History and Buildings

The First School Building

The first Monument Valley High School building was very unique. It was shaped like a circle, similar to a traditional Navajo hogan. Inside, there was a large wooden basketball court in the center. Classrooms and other school areas were built around this central court.

This building was used for about 20 years. It was a special place for students and teachers.

The Current School Building

After the first building was destroyed by fire in 1978, a new school was quickly built. This new building is the one students use today. It continues to serve the community of Kayenta and surrounding areas.

Sports and the Nash Center

Home of the Mustangs

The school's sports teams are called the Mustangs. They are famous for their success in basketball and volleyball. The teams used to play in a smaller gym called Beets Gymnasium.

The Nash Center

In 1991, a much larger sports arena was built. It cost $11 million and can hold 3,800 people. This arena is called the Nash Center. It was named after two amazing coaches, Lucinda and Robert Nash.

Lucinda Nash coached the girls' volleyball team, known as the Lady Mustangs. She led them to win an incredible 37 state championships! Robert Nash coached the girls' basketball team. He helped them win four state championships. Both coaches are considered legends in the Kayenta area and on the Navajo Nation.

The Nash Center was the biggest arena on the Navajo Nation until 2006. It is still a very important place for school sports and events.
