The Marqués del Duero monument, also called the Monument to the Marquis of the Duero, is a famous piece of public art in Madrid, Spain. It stands in the middle of Plaza del Doctor Marañón. This monument features a bronze statue of a person on horseback. It shows Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha e Irigoyen, a general who was important in fighting against a group called the Carlists. The statue rests on a stone base decorated with two carved pictures called reliefs.
About the Marqués del Duero Monument
This impressive monument was created by Andrés Aleu
. The bronze statue itself is very tall, standing 4.55 meters (about 15 feet) high. It is also very heavy, weighing 8,280 kilograms (over 18,000 pounds).This statue is believed to be the first equestrian (horseback rider) statue made in Spain since the 1600s. The bronze used for the statue came from old cannons. These cannons were loaned by the Spanish government. Other money needed for the monument was raised by people across the country.
Carved Pictures (Reliefs)
The stone base of the monument has two special carved pictures, called reliefs. These reliefs show important moments from General Gutiérrez de la Concha's life. They were made by Pablo Gibert
.One relief shows a time in 1847 when Spain helped Portugal during a civil war there. It shows General Gutiérrez de la Concha entering the city of Porto. He is with his team, and the local leader of the rebels, Vasconcelos , is greeting him. Because he helped bring peace, the Portuguese government gave him a high honor called the Grand Collar of the Order of the Tower and the Sword. The Spanish government also gave him the special title of Marquis of Duero. This title meant he was a Grandee of Spain, a very important noble.
The other relief shows the sad moment when the general died on June 27, 1874. It shows his helpers lifting his body, which was badly wounded. They were putting him on a horse to take him away from the Battle of Monte MuroThird Carlist War.
. This battle was part of theOn the monument, there are bronze letters that say: Al capitán general, Marqués del Duero. This means "To the Captain General, Marquis del Duero."
The statue was placed on a marble base with three steps when it was first shown to the public. It was surrounded by rows of flower pots. The monument was officially opened on June 27, 1885.
