How Mooala Started
Jeff Richards started Mooala Brands, LLC on November 30, 2012. He founded the company in Dallas, Texas. In 2012, Richards found out he was lactose intolerant. This means his body had trouble digesting milk products.
Creating Bananamilk
Richards began trying out different recipes. He wanted to find a milk that was not made from dairy. He also had a mild allergy to nuts. So, he started using bananas in his recipes. Bananas are free of the top eight common food allergens.
He took his recipe to the University of Minnesota. He wanted to make sure it could be made in large amounts for stores. Richards and the university created a rich, creamy drink. They used bananas, sunflower seed butter, cinnamon, and sea salt. The drink tasted a lot like banana nut bread.
Growing the Company
Mooala products first appeared in stores in August 2016. They were sold in local Royal Blue Grocery stores in Dallas. At first, the company only sold drinks. This included their "bananamilk" line. They also sold almond milk and oat milk.
In February 2018, Mooala announced good news. The company had raised $5 million to help it grow. Fast Company magazine reported on Mooala's success. It said Mooala had the fastest sales growth in 2018 among new plant-based milk companies.
New Products and Expansion
In July 2019, Mooala launched plant-based creamers. These are like cream for coffee, but made from plants. In November, Mooala finished raising $8.3 million in funding. This money helped the company expand even more.
By this time, Mooala products were sold in big grocery stores. These included Whole Foods, Kroger, and Costco.
Recent Growth
In early 2020, the company grew a lot compared to 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic in the United States also caused more growth. People worried about meat shortages. This led to more interest in plant-based foods. Mooala saw even more growth as part of this trend.
In October 2020, the company started selling products that did not need to be kept cold. In December, Mooala launched a new drink. It was the first keto vegan milk in the beverage industry.
