History of the Moomin Museum
Building the Moominhouse Model
The famous blue Moominhouse model has five stories. It was built by Tuulikki Pietilä, Pentti Eistola, and Tove Jansson. They worked on it in the late 1970s. Tove Jansson usually drew the Moominhouse as round. However, for a special art show in Bratislava in 1979, they made it square. This was because it needed to fit into a corner.
They built the house freely, without any detailed plans. It does not follow one specific building style. Instead, it has ideas from many different styles. Tuulikki Pietilä's brother, who was an architect, helped design the ground floor.
The Moominhouse on Tour
After the 1979 art show, the Moominhouse was supposed to travel around the world. But it only toured the Nordic countries from 1980 to 1983. After the tour, it needed some repairs. So, it was taken to Tove Jansson's art studio.
In 1986, the Moominhouse was shown again at the Art Museum of Tampere. It found its permanent home at the new Moomin Museum in 1987. It has been on display there ever since. Pictures of this Moomin House are even in one of Tove Jansson's books. The book is called An Unwanted Guest.
Museum's Journey to Tampere Hall
For many years, until the end of 2012, the Moomin Museum was in the basement. It was located in the Metso building of the city library. In December 2012, the museum moved to the basement of the Tampere Art Museum.
While the museum was moving, some of Tove Jansson's Moomin drawings were shown. They were displayed at the Vapriikki Museum Centre. The newly updated Moomin Valley museum opened on January 2, 2013. The Moomin statue outside the Metso building stayed in its original spot.
In 2016, the museum moved again. This time, it moved to Tampere Hall and was renamed the Moomin Museum. The Moomin statue also moved to the new location. The museum officially opened in June 2017. At that time, it was the first and only museum of its kind in the world.
