She was born in the United States but moved to Finland as a child. Tuulikki Pietilä is known as one of Finland's most important graphic artists. Her artwork has been shown in many art exhibitions. She also taught art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki. Later, she trained other graphic artists and wrote several books about graphic arts.

Her Early Life

Tuulikki Pietilä was born in Seattle, Washington, in the United States. When she was a child, her family moved to Finland. She had a brother named Reima Pietilä, who became a famous architect.

Tuulikki Pietilä passed away in 2009 in Helsinki, Finland, when she was 92 years old. She gave more than 1,400 of her art pieces to the Ateneum art museum.

Her Art Career

Tuulikki Pietilä began her art studies at the Turku Drawing School. She studied there from 1933 to 1936. After that, she continued her education at the drawing school of the Finnish Art Association from 1936 to 1940.

She also studied in other countries:

During her time studying art, she met another artist named Tove Jansson. They later became very close friends and partners in life.

Her Art Styles

Pietilä created art using many different methods. She made woodcuts and linographs. Her art showed different styles, including realism, which means making things look very real, and cubism, which uses geometric shapes.

Her first art exhibition was in Turku in 1935, when she was still a student. Her first solo exhibition, where only her work was shown, happened in 1951. From 1967, she took part in the Purnu group's summer art shows. A special exhibition showing her work from over the years was held there in 1986.

Tuulikki Pietilä received much praise for her art. She was given the Order of the Lion of Finland award in 1963. In 1982, she became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, which was the same school where she had once been a student.

Her Friendship with Tove Jansson

Pietilä reconnected with Tove Jansson in 1955. They became very close friends and life partners. They worked together on many projects. Many of these projects were related to Jansson's famous characters, the Moomins.

Pietilä created 43 three-dimensional art pieces. These pieces are now displayed at the Moomin Museum in Tampere. Many people believe that Pietilä was the inspiration for the character Tooticky in the Moomin books.

Life on Klovharu Island

Pietilä and Jansson spent many summers together on Klovharu island in Pellinki. Pietilä filmed their travels and life on the island. This footage was later used to make several documentaries:

  • Haru, yksinäinen saari (Haru, the lonely island), made in 1998.
  • Tove ja Tooti Euroopassa (Tove and Tooti in Europe), made in 2004.

In 1992, Pietilä attended the Independence Day reception at the Presidential Palace with Jansson. They are remembered as being a very special pair to attend this important event together.
