Early Life and Music Journey
Camae Ayewa was born in Aberdeen, Maryland. She grew up in a public housing area there. Later, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She went to the Art Institute to study photography.
In 2016, Moor Mother released her album called ... Bones. It came out through Don Giovanni Records. This album also came with a book of her poetry. Important music magazines like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone thought it was one of the best albums of the year.
In 2017, she released another album, The Motionless Present. This album featured other artists like Geng and DJ Haram. In the same year, she worked with Mental Jewelry on an EP (a shorter album) called Crime Waves.
Moor Mother was a special guest curator at the Le Guess Who? music festival in 2018. This means she helped choose some of the artists who performed. In 2019, she released her album Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes.
Ayewa is also a lead member of Irreversible Entanglements. This group plays a type of music called "free-jazz" and focuses on themes of freedom. She met the other musicians in the group through music and activism. For example, she met bassist Luke Stewart when their bands played together. She met saxophonist Keir Neuringer through a group called Books Through Bars. The band has performed at famous places like the Kennedy Center. Their music has been praised by many music publications. The band members also played on her special theater show, Circuit City.
In 2021, Camae Ayewa started teaching. She became an assistant professor at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.
