Luke is a leader of his own group, the Exposure Quintet. He's also a key member of several other bands, like Irreversible Entanglements and Blacks' Myths. One of his groups, Heroes Are Gang Leaders, even won an American Book Award in 2018!
Since 2010, Luke has helped run CapitalBop, a group that supports jazz music in Washington, D.C. He helps organize concerts and writes about music for their website. In 2020, DownBeat magazine named him one of "25 for the Future." This award recognizes artists who are shaping the music world.
Luke has played and recorded with many famous musicians. Some of these include Camae Ayewa, Archie Shepp, and Jaimie Branch.
Luke's Early Life and Music Journey
Luke Stewart grew up in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. When he was young, he learned to play the saxophone, violin, and guitar. In high school, he started playing the electric bass.
In 2005, Luke was planning to move to Washington, D.C. for an internship. But then, Hurricane Katrina hit his home state of Mississippi. Luke decided to stay in D.C. and went to American University. There, he also studied audio engineering, which is about recording and mixing sound. Later, he earned a master's degree in Arts Management.
After moving to D.C., Luke often went to and performed at jazz and rock concerts. He also worked at a radio station called WPFW. He even had his own weekly jazz radio show!
In 2010, Luke met Giovanni Russonello. Giovanni had just started CapitalBop, an organization that helps promote jazz music. Luke began writing for CapitalBop and later became a co-leader of the group.
Luke met Camae Ayewa, also known as Moor Mother, while playing in a band called Laughing Man. In 2015, Luke joined Camae and other musicians to form Irreversible Entanglements. This group is known for its "liberation-oriented free-jazz" style. Their music has been featured on many "best-of" lists.
Luke believes that music made by many people working together should not have one main leader. He wants his music to show how everyone can contribute equally. In 2021, he was a Resident Composer at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, which is a cool place for artists.
