His mother, Eilis, was the daughter of Eoin MacNeill, who was a very important leader of the Irish Volunteers, a group that helped Ireland become independent.

Moore McDowell's younger brother is Michael McDowell, who is also a well-known politician and a Senator in Ireland.

Education and Teaching

Moore McDowell went to University College Dublin (UCD) for his studies. After that, he received a special scholarship called a Research Fellowship from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). This allowed him to study at Worcester College, Oxford, in England, from 1967 to 1969.

Throughout his career, Moore McDowell has taught at several universities. He taught at UCD in Ireland, and also at universities in the United States, including San Francisco State University, the University of California at Davis, and the University of Delaware.

Political Connections

While he was a student at UCD, Moore McDowell was a member of Young Fine Gael. This is the youth group for the Fine Gael political party, which his grandfather, Eoin MacNeill, was also connected to.

Moore McDowell was also part of a group of economists, including Sean Barrett and Colm McCarthy. They were sometimes called the 'Doheny & Nesbitt School of Economics'. This group was known for helping to shape the early ideas and plans of the Progressive Democrats, another political party in Ireland.
