Morar railway station is a train station in the village of Morar, located in the Highland area of Scotland. It's part of the famous West Highland Line, which is a railway route known for its beautiful scenery. The station is found between Arisaig and Mallaig. It's managed by ScotRail, who also run all the trains that stop here.
Station History
Morar station first opened its doors on 1 April 1901. This happened when the Mallaig Extension Railway line was completed and started running trains.
For many years, the station was home to special "camping coaches." These were old train carriages that were turned into small holiday homes. From 1936 to 1939, and again from 1952 to 1969, people could rent these coaches for their vacations. They were like tiny apartments on wheels, with a kitchen and sleeping areas.
What's at the Station?
Morar station has a few useful things for travelers. There's a small car park if you're arriving by car. You'll also find a "help point" where you can get assistance if needed. There are places to park your bicycle and some seats where you can wait for your train.
It's easy to get around the station because it has step-free access, meaning no stairs to climb. However, you can't buy tickets directly at the station. Passengers need to buy their tickets before they travel or from the train guard once they are on the train.
How Many People Use Morar Station?
The number of passengers using Morar station changes each year. Here's a look at how many people entered and exited the station over different periods:
- 2017-18: 4,996 passengers
- 2018-19: 4,372 passengers
- 2019-20: 4,074 passengers
- 2020-21: 804 passengers (This was during the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected travel.)
- 2021-22: 3,218 passengers (Numbers started to go up again.)
These numbers are counted over a twelve-month period, starting in April each year.
Train Services

On Sundays, there are fewer trains, with three trains in each direction. One of the trains heading east stops at Fort William and does not continue to Glasgow.
