Morazán (pronounced mo-ra-SAN) is a town and a municipality in the Honduran department of Yoro. The town itself has about 22,240 people. The whole municipality has around 50,930 people.

It is located in the northern part of Honduras. Morazán is found between the city of Yoro and the municipality of El Negrito. It is also north of the Pico Pijol National Park. Like many towns built during the time of the Spanish Empire, Morazán was designed with a grid pattern. It has a main square in the center.

History of Morazán

In ancient times, the people who now live in Morazán lived in a place called Toledo. This old settlement was about three kilometers away. Later, these people moved to the current location of Morazán. They named their new home Cataguana.

In 1801, Cataguana was counted as part of the Yoro Prefectures. By the 1887 census, it was officially recognized as a municipality.

Geography and Location

The municipality of Morazán has clear borders with other areas. To the north, it borders the town of Tela. To the south, it borders the city of Victoria. The town of Yoro is to its east. To the west, it borders the municipality of El Negrito.

People of Morazán

In 2013, a census was taken in Honduras. This census showed that the Morazán municipality had 40,402 people living there. Most of the people, about 93.77%, were Mestizo. Mestizo means they have mixed European and Indigenous ancestry.

About 3.70% of the people were Indigenous. Most of these Indigenous people, 3.36%, were Tolupan. A smaller number of people were White (2.01%). There were also some Black or Afro-Honduran people (0.26%) and other groups (0.26%).

Education

Morazán has an important school called Instituto Polivalente Francisco Morazán. This school helps students learn many different subjects.
