Yoro is one of the 18 main areas, called departments, in the country of Honduras. It has rich farming lands, especially in the Aguan River valley and the Sula Valley. The main city and capital of the department is Yoro. This department covers about 7,939 square kilometers (3,065 square miles). In 2005, around 503,886 people lived here. Yoro is famous for a unique event called the Lluvia de Peces, which means "rain of fishes." This is a tradition where fish are said to fall from the sky during very heavy rains.

People of Yoro
In 2013, a census counted 570,595 people living in the Yoro Department. Most of the people, about 88.12%, are Mestizo. This means they have a mix of European and Indigenous heritage.
About 7.26% of the population is White. Around 3.79% are Indigenous people. The largest Indigenous groups include the Tolupan (2.92%), Chʼortiʼ (0.39%), and Lenca (0.28%). A smaller group, the Nahua, make up 0.09%.
About 0.71% of the people are Black or Afro-Honduran. The remaining 0.12% belong to other groups.
Yoro's Economy
Historically, the Yoro Department has been known for its natural resources. People here used to harvest valuable trees like mahogany and cedar. These woods were then exported to other countries. The area also had a strong cattle industry, raising animals for meat and other products.
