Yoro is a city and a municipality in Honduras. It is the main city of the Yoro Department. In 2023, about 103,481 people lived in the Yoro municipality. Yoro is famous for a special event called Lluvia de Peces, which means "Rain of Fish." People say that during strong storms, fish sometimes fall from the sky!

People of Yoro: Demographics

The people living in Yoro come from different backgrounds. In 2013, a census counted 86,665 people in the Yoro municipality. Most of them, about 86.5%, were Mestizo. This means they have a mix of European and Indigenous (native) heritage.

About 10.6% of the people were Indigenous. The largest Indigenous group in Yoro is the Tolupan people. A smaller group is the Lenca people. There were also smaller numbers of people who identified as White or Black or Afro-Honduran.

The Amazing Rain of Fish: Lluvia de Peces

One of the most unique things about Yoro is the "Rain of Fish" or Lluvia de Peces. This event is said to happen every year, usually in May or June. People claim that strong thunderstorms bring fish falling from the sky.

What Happens During the Fish Rain?

Locals say that dark clouds gather, followed by heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. After the storm, hundreds of small, silver fish are found on the ground. These fish are usually still alive. People collect them to eat.

Is it Really Fish Falling from the Sky?

Scientists have different ideas about how this might happen. One idea is that strong winds, like waterspouts, pick up fish from nearby rivers or lakes. Then, the fish are carried in the air and dropped over Yoro. Another idea is that the fish live underground in caves or tunnels. Heavy rains might flood these areas, forcing the fish to the surface.

The Festival of the Fish Rain

The people of Yoro celebrate this unique event with a festival. It is a big part of their culture and identity. The festival includes music, dancing, and, of course, eating the fish!
