History of Alcoyano Football Club
The city of Alcoy had a strong sports club called Boxing Club Deportivo Alcoyano. In 1927, its football (soccer) team won many games. This success led to the creation of a new football club. Club Deportivo Alcoyano was officially formed in 1928. It was created by combining two local clubs, Levante and Racing. However, it took four more years for the club to join the official Royal Spanish Football Federation.
Early Success and Top League Debut
In 1942, Alcoyano reached the Segunda División for the first time. This is Spain's second-highest football league. Over the next few years, they moved between this league and La Liga, which is the top league in Spain. Their first game in La Liga was in 1945. They lost 2–3 at home against Real Murcia. They ended up being relegated that season. But in 1945, Alcoyano made history by winning the Segunda División. This earned them their first promotion to La Liga.
Best Season and Later Years
The 1947–48 season was the best in Alcoyano's history. They managed to stay in the first division. They even finished higher than famous club Real Madrid that year. Alcoyano finished in 10th place in La Liga. After this, for about 40 years, the club mostly played in the third and fourth divisions. They had only short periods in the second division. In the 1953–54 season, Alcoyano was relegated to the Tercera División for the first time.
Recent Times and Cup Runs
Alcoyano returned to the third division in 2004. They often reached the play-offs to try and get promoted. However, they usually did not succeed. In the 2005–06 season, they had a great run in the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup). They beat RCD Mallorca 4–1. They then lost by a close score of 0–1 to Atlético Madrid in the fourth round.
In June 2011, after 42 years, Alcoyano finally returned to the second division. They finished third in their regular season. Then, they won their promotion play-off games against Real Madrid Castilla, SD Eibar, and CD Lugo. However, they only stayed in the second division for one season. They were relegated back to the third division.
Making History in the Copa del Rey
On January 20, 2021, Alcoyano made headlines. They famously knocked out Spanish football giant Real Madrid from the 2020–21 Copa del Rey. They beat them 2–1 at home in an exciting match.
