Besides farming, people in El Progreso also raise cattle. They also work in making and selling clothes and fabrics.
Because El Progreso is a busy travel spot, you can find many fast-food restaurants here. They serve the many travelers who pass through. The Copprome Orphanage is also located in this city.
A large, modern shopping mall called Megaplaza opened in 2007. It has a big food court with many Honduran and American fast-food places. You can also find cell phone stores, an arcade, and department stores like Carrion. Carrion is the largest department store in Central America. Nature and Geography
Mico Quemado Mountains
The Mico Quemado mountain range is a major natural attraction. It is located to the east of El Progreso. These mountains face the large Valley of Sula.
More than 280 square kilometers of these mountains are protected by the Honduran government. This area is special because it has many unique plants and animals. The mountains are also important for the city's water supply.
Ulúa River
The Ulúa River is one of the longest and most important rivers in Honduras. It starts in the Intibucá department. There, it is known as the Rio Grande de Otoro.
The river flows through several departments, including Santa Bárbara, Cortés, Yoro, and Atlántida. Many other rivers and streams join it, such as the Higuito River and the Comayagua River. The Ulúa River is about 400 kilometers long.
Because of its size, the Ulúa River can be powerful. During heavy rains or storms, it can overflow. This can cause flooding in the areas it passes through. For example, in 1998, Hurricane Mitch brought a lot of rain. This caused the Ulúa River to flood its banks.
