Playing Career
Early Football Days
Moreno Torricelli was born in Erba, Italy. He was one of three children, with a twin brother named Paulo and a sister named Ariann. He started playing football when he was about eight years old. This was in his hometown of Verano Brianza.
When he was 13, a team called Como asked him to play in a youth championship. After this short time, he went back to his old amateur team, US Folgore. He played for Folgore until he was 18. Then, he moved to a team called Oggiono.
In 1990, Torricelli joined Caratese. At this time, he also worked in a factory part-time. Caratese was a high-level amateur team.
Time with Juventus
In July 1992, Caratese played a friendly match against Serie A giants Juventus. Juventus is one of the biggest teams in Italy. Torricelli played so well in this game that the Juventus coach, Giovanni Trapattoni, was very impressed. Juventus then bought him for about 50 million Italian lire. This was a good amount of money for a player from an amateur team.
Because Moreno used to be a carpenter, his Juventus teammate Roberto Baggio gave him a nickname. He called him Geppetto, which is the name of the woodcarver from the story of Pinocchio.
Torricelli played his first game in Serie A on September 13, 1992. Juventus won that game 4–1 against Atalanta. He quickly became a regular player for Juventus. In his first season, he helped the team win the UEFA Cup in 1993. They beat Borussia Dortmund in the final.
Moreno was known for his big heart and strong determination. Even though he wasn't the most skillful player, he was very important to Juventus's defense. He could play in any defensive position, but he liked playing at right-back the most. During his time, Juventus was one of the best teams in the world.
With Juventus, he won many trophies:
- Three Serie A titles (the top Italian league)
- Two Italian Supercups
- One Coppa Italia (Italian Cup)
- One UEFA Champions League (the biggest club competition in Europe)
