Morley is a small, quiet place called a hamlet in Canton, a town in St. Lawrence County, New York, in the United States. Think of a hamlet as a very small village.

Where is Morley?

Morley is located right next to the Grasse River. It is about 6 miles (10 km) north of the Village of Canton. The river has some fast-moving parts called rapids here. Today, you can find Morley where two roads, St. Lawrence County Routes 14 and 27, meet.

A Look at Morley's Past

Morley was first settled by people in 1810. When it was first founded, it had a different name: Long Rapids. In 1839, a post office was opened in the hamlet. That same year, the name was changed to Morley. The post office is no longer open today.

The Busy Days of Morley

During its busiest time, the main place for activity in Morley was the Harrison Grist Mill. A grist mill is a building where grain, like wheat or corn, is ground into flour. At its peak, about 300 people lived in Morley.

Historic Buildings in Morley

Two important buildings in Morley are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized as special places in American history. These buildings are the Harrison Grist Mill and the Trinity Episcopal Chapel.
