The Morro Jable Lighthouse (which is called Faro de Morro Jable in Spanish) is an active lighthouse on the Canary island of Fuerteventura. You can find this tall lighthouse right next to the beach, close to the town and holiday resort of Morro Jable.
About the Lighthouse
This lighthouse was finished in 1991. It is the tallest lighthouse in the Canary Islands. Its tower stands 59 meters (about 193 feet) high.
To give you an idea, it's taller than the Maspalomas Lighthouse on Gran Canaria, which is 56 meters tall. It's also taller than the Pechiguera Lighthouse on Lanzarote, which is 50 meters tall.
How the Light Works
The light from the Morro Jable Lighthouse shines from 62 meters (about 203 feet) above the sea. This means its light can be seen from far away.
It can be spotted from up to 17 nautical miles away. A nautical mile is a special unit used for distance at sea, equal to about 1.85 kilometers. The light flashes white two times every 10 seconds.
Don't Get Confused!
Sometimes, people mix up the Morro Jable Lighthouse with another, older lighthouse. This other lighthouse is the Punta Jandía Lighthouse, built in the 1800s.
The Punta Jandía lighthouse is about 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) away. It's located at the very western end of the Jandia peninsula. So, remember, they are two different lighthouses!
