A Look Back at Morundah's History
Post Office and Railway Station
Morundah's post office first opened on May 1, 1877. Back then, it was called Colombo Creek Post Office. Its name changed to Murundah in 1889, and then to Morundah in 1895. The post office served the community for many years before closing in 1982.
Morundah also had a railway station. It opened on September 16, 1884. This station was part of the Tocumwal railway line. The railway station closed its doors on November 17, 1975.
Morundah Football Club
Morundah had its own Australian Rules Football team. It was called the Morundah Football Club. The team played in the Faithful & District Football Association. They competed from 1924 until 1939.
The club stopped playing during World War Two. This break lasted from 1940 to 1945. After the war ended, the team did not start up again.
Morundah's Opera Tradition
Morundah is quite famous for something special: hosting opera shows! It might seem unusual for a small town. But Morundah has a strong tradition of bringing opera to its community.
Early Opera Performances
In 2006, OzOpera performed Carmen in Morundah. OzOpera is the touring part of Opera Australia. The next year, in 2007, the Victorian Opera performed Cosi fan tutte. Both of these shows were a big hit.
In 2012, another opera company called Co-Opera visited. They performed Die Fledermaus. This show was also very popular with the audience.
The New Opera House
For a while, Morundah's "opera house" was quite unique. It was actually a building that used to be a pig shed! In 2016, this old building was taken down.
A new, bigger building was built in its place. This new structure was designed for more than just opera. It can now host many different types of events.
