Moses Orr (born in 1847, died 1897) was a brave soldier from Ireland who served in the U.S. Army. He was part of the 1st U.S. Cavalry and fought in the Apache Wars. Moses Orr received the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get. He earned this award for his courage during a special military mission against the Apache people in Arizona between 1872 and 1873.
Early Life and Military Service
Moses Orr was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1847. When he was older, he moved to the United States. He joined the U.S. Army in Philadelphia.
Orr became a soldier in Company A of the 1st U.S. Cavalry. This unit was involved in the Apache Wars during the 1870s. These wars were conflicts between the U.S. Army and some Apache groups in the American Southwest.
The Winter Campaign
Moses Orr served under Lieutenant Colonel George Crook. Crook led a special "winter campaign" against the Apache in the Arizona Territory. This campaign happened between 1872 and 1873.
On April 12, 1875, Moses Orr was given the Medal of Honor. This award recognized his "gallant conduct" (meaning very brave actions) during the fights with the Apaches.
Later Life
After leaving the military, Moses Orr went back to Philadelphia. He passed away there on May 10, 1897, when he was 50 years old. He was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery.
