About the Motherland Party
How the Party Started
Fazail Agamali was an important person in Azerbaijan's movement for independence between 1988 and 1990. He was part of the Azerbaijan Popular Front. After some difficult events in January 1990, he had disagreements with other leaders. Because of this, Fazail Agamali left the Popular Front. His supporters then asked him to create a new political party. So, on November 24, 1990, the Motherland Party was formed, and Fazail Agamali became its leader.
Working with the Government
The Motherland Party first joined a group of parties that were against the government for the presidential elections in 1991. After the 1992 presidential election, the party decided to support and join the government under President Abulfaz Elchibey. When Heydar Aliyev won the presidential elections in 1993, the AVP also joined his government. The party's leader, Fazail Agamali, served as the Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Population under both presidents.
In the Parliament
The Motherland Party regularly takes part in elections for the parliament. The party has won seats in the National Assembly of Azerbaijan in many elections. These include the elections in 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. This means they have had representatives helping to make laws for the country.
What the Party Believes In
The main goal of the Motherland Party is to create a "free, powerful, democratic, and whole Azerbaijan." The party's ideas are based on the principle of statism. This means they believe the government should play a strong role in guiding the country and its economy. They also follow National conservatism, which means they care a lot about their country's traditions and values.
How the Party is Organized
The Motherland Party (AVP) has a Political Council with 6 members and a Supreme Assembly with 14 members. The party also has a Youth Committee for young people and a Women's Council for women. They have local offices in 55 raions (which are like districts) and 4 cities across Azerbaijan.
The main office of the Motherland Party is in the Narimanov district of Baku, the capital city. The party has 62 regional organizations in total. About 20,000 people are members of the Motherland Party.
