The Motherland Party (which is called Ana Vətən Partiyası in Azerbaijani, or AVP for short) is a political party in Azerbaijan. It supports the current government led by Ilham Aliyev. The party started in 1990 and was officially registered in 1992.

The Story of the Motherland Party

How the Party Started

Fazail Agamali was very active in Azerbaijan's movement for independence between 1988 and 1990. He was an important person in the Azerbaijan Popular Front. However, after some difficult events in January 1990, he had disagreements with other leaders of the movement. Because of these disagreements, Fazail Agamali left the Popular Front.

His supporters then asked him to form a new political party. So, on November 24, 1990, the Motherland Party was officially created. Fazail Agamali was chosen as the party's first leader.

Joining the Government

The AVP first joined a group of parties that were against the government for the presidential elections in 1991. After the presidential election in 1992, the party decided to support and join the government led by President Abulfaz Elchibey.

When Heydar Aliyev won the presidential elections in 1993, the AVP also joined his government. Fazail Agamali, the party leader, served as the Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Population under both presidents. This means he was in charge of helping people with jobs and social support.

Being in Parliament

The Motherland Party regularly takes part in elections for the parliament. The parliament in Azerbaijan is called the National Assembly of Azerbaijan. The party has won seats in the National Assembly in many elections, including those in 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. They also won a seat in the 2024 election.

What the Party Believes In

The main goal of the Motherland Party is to help create a "free, powerful, democratic, and whole Azerbaijan." This means they want Azerbaijan to be a strong country where people have freedom and a say in how things are run. The party's main ideas are based on the principle of statism, which means they believe the government should play a strong role in guiding the country.

How the Party is Organized

The Motherland Party (AVP) has a Political Council with 6 members and a Supreme Assembly with 14 members. These groups help make important decisions for the party.

The party also has a Youth Committee for young people and a Women's Council for women. It has branches in 55 different raions (which are like districts) and 4 cities across Azerbaijan.

The main office of the Motherland Party is in the Narimanov district of Baku, the capital city. The party has 62 local groups in different areas. In total, the Motherland Party has about 20,000 members.
