Motoyaki facts for kids
Motoyaki is a special way of cooking where food is baked with a creamy sauce on top. This tasty dish is often served in an oyster shell. You can usually find Motoyaki in Japanese restaurants, especially along the Pacific coast of Canada. Two popular kinds are oyster motoyaki and lobster motoyaki.
Motoyaki's Japanese Roots
In Japan, there is a sauce called tamagonomoto. It is made by mixing egg yolks and oil, much like mayonnaise, but without any vinegar. Sometimes, people add miso (a savory paste) or soy sauce to it. When food is topped with this sauce and baked, it is called moto-yaki or tamamoto-yaki.
Even though motoyaki is a traditional Japanese dish, the names motoyaki or tamagonomoto are not very well known in Japan today. Instead, a similar dish made with mayonnaise, called mayonēzu-yaki or mayo-yaki, is much more popular.
The Motoyaki you find in Canada is quite similar to the Japanese mayonēzu-yaki. Both use mayonnaise, which is different from the traditional Japanese motoyaki sauce that doesn't have vinegar.
