History of Mound
The village of Mound got its name from a special feature. There used to be a Native American mound at the place where the community first started. These mounds are raised earth structures built by ancient peoples.
Geography of Mound
Mound is located in the eastern part of Madison Parish. It is about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of the famous Mississippi River.
Location and Nearby Cities
If you travel along U.S. Route 80, Mound is about 10 miles (16 km) east of Tallulah. Tallulah is the main town, or parish seat, for Madison Parish. Mound is also about 12 miles (19 km) west of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Transportation and Waterways
Interstate 20, a major highway, goes through the southern part of the village. You can get to Mound from Exit 182. The Vicksburg Tallulah Regional Airport is located just north of the village.
The village covers an area of about 0.52 square miles (1.35 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. A small part, about 0.002 square miles (0.005 square kilometers), is water. Walnut Bayou, which is a branch of the Mississippi River, flows through the southwest corner of Mound.
