Mount Austin is a suburb located in the southern part of Wagga Wagga, a city in New South Wales, Australia. It has clear boundaries: Fernleigh Road to the north, Leavenworth Drive to the south, Glenfield Road to the west, and Willans Hill to the east. Many homes in Mount Austin were built by a government program called Housing NSW. This program helps provide housing for people.
Mount Austin has its own school, the Mount Austin Public School. However, Mount Austin High School is actually located in the nearby suburb of Tolland.
Turvey Tops Shopping Centre
Even though it's called Turvey Tops, this shopping centre is found in Mount Austin, not in the neighbouring suburb of Turvey Park. The idea for the shopping centre started in the 1950s with the New South Wales Housing Commission.
Work on the centre didn't begin until the 1960s. This was after a company called Great Southern Enterprises Pty Ltd took over the land. Turvey Tops officially opened its doors on December 3, 1963. About 3,000 people came to celebrate its grand opening.
Anderson Park
Anderson Park is a special park located within Mount Austin. It was officially opened in 1987. The park is named after George P. Anderson (1885-1957). He was a famous footballer for the Collingwood Football Club and lived in the local area for a long time.
