Kooringal is a busy suburb in the city of Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. The name Kooringal is believed to mean "Side of a Hill" in the Wiradjuri Aboriginal language. This area is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the city center, along Lake Albert Road. Kooringal is an important area for new growth in the eastern part of Wagga Wagga.
Kooringal is home to several schools. Kooringal High School, located on Ziegler Avenue, is the biggest secondary school in Wagga Wagga. Other schools in the area include Kooringal Public School, Sturt Public School, and Sacred Heart School. For shopping and services, Kooringal has a large shopping center called Kooringal Mall. Here you can find a Woolworths supermarket, McDonald's, Subway, Domino's Pizza, an Australia Post store, and many other shops.
History of Kooringal
Before it became a suburb, Kooringal was a large property used for dairy farming and raising animals. This property also had a main house, known as a homestead, and was called Kooringal in the 1960s. At one point, the area was known as Henwood Park Settlement. This name came from Stan Henwood, a pastoralist (someone who owns or manages land for grazing animals) who divided much of the land into smaller pieces.
Local people asked for a post office, which was set up in Henwood Park Settlement and named "Darrung". However, the name "Henwood Park Settlement" was later changed. The Wagga Wagga City Council decided to name the suburb Kooringal, taking the name from the original property. The Kooringal Mall, a popular shopping center today, was built in two stages. The first part, with ten shops, opened in October 1968. The second part, adding nine more shops, was finished in August 1971.
