Mount Ayanganna is a unique mountain in western Guyana. It is a type of mountain called a tepui, which is a flat-topped mountain with very steep sides. Mount Ayanganna is made of sandstone.

This impressive mountain is part of the Pakaraima Mountains. It stands about 85 kilometers (53 miles) east of another famous tepui, Mount Roraima. Mount Ayanganna reaches a height of 2,041 meters (6,696 feet). This makes it the easternmost tepui that is taller than 2,000 meters. It is also part of a larger area known as the Guiana Shield and the Guayana Highlands.

Nature and Wildlife

The lower parts of Mount Ayanganna are covered in thick, tall forests. These forests can be found up to about 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) high. As you go higher, the mountain has different "steps" or flat areas. These flat areas are separated by steeper slopes.

The flat plateaus often have soil that holds a lot of water. Because of this, they support different kinds of plants, like low-growing forests or special plants called terrestrial bromeliads. The steeper slopes have medium-sized forests. Scientists have also studied the amphibians and reptiles living on Mount Ayanganna. The entire mountain is surrounded by lush rainforest.

History and Culture

Mount Ayanganna holds a special place in the history of Guyana. In 1966, the national flag of Guyana was raised on Mount Ayanganna. This event marked the country's independence. Every year, members of the Guyana Defence Force climb the mountain to repeat this important tradition.

The main army base headquarters in Georgetown, the capital city, is also named after Mount Ayanganna. In 1992, a female soldier joined the expedition to the summit for the first time. This was an important moment for women in the military.
