Mount Britton started as a town in 1881. This happened because gold was discovered there! Many people came hoping to find their fortune. At its busiest, about 1,500 people lived in Mount Britton.

Life in the Gold Rush Town

The town had its own post office, which opened in June 1881. There was also a school for children, which opened around 1883. These services helped the town grow and support its many residents.

Why the Town Disappeared

By the late 1880s, the amount of gold found started to decrease. It became harder to find gold close to the surface or in shallow mines. Because of this, people began to leave Mount Britton. The town slowly became empty and was eventually abandoned.

Today, the old town site is a historical place. You can find it at the end of Mount Britton Road. It reminds us of the exciting gold rush days in Queensland.
