How Did Mount Brown Get Its Name?
There are different stories about how Mount Brown got its name. One story from the US Park Service says it was named in 1894. A man named William Brown from Chicago was on a camping trip near Lake McDonald. His friends, Charles H. Russell and Frank A. Johnson, climbed the mountain behind their camp. They decided to name it after William Brown.
However, another idea suggests a different origin. The US Geographic Board decided in 1929 to accept the name Mount Brown. They noted that the name was already used by local people. They believed it was likely named after Louis Brown, an early pioneer in Montana.
The Historic Fire Lookout
Below the top of Mount Brown, on its southwestern side, is an important historic building. This is the Mount Brown Fire Lookout. It was built in 1928. Fire lookouts are small buildings used by park rangers to spot wildfires from high places. This lookout is so important that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
