Mount Cunningham is a tall mountain located on the west side of South Georgia. It sits near the Esmark Glacier, between two bays called Jossac Bight and Queen Maud Bay.

This mountain is 1,218 meters (about 3,996 feet) high. This makes it the 16th tallest mountain on South Georgia. It was named in memory of Scottish mountaineer John Crabbe Cunningham. He sadly passed away on January 31, 1980, after a climbing accident near Holyhead.

Who Was John Crabbe Cunningham?

John Crabbe Cunningham was a famous Scottish climber. He spent many years creating new ways to climb on ice. He also helped improve how people climbed on rocks.

Cunningham worked for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). He also worked at Glenmore Lodge and I M Marsh Campus in Liverpool. He was part of the BAS in the British Antarctic Territory (BAT).

He achieved some amazing things:

  • On November 23, 1964, he was the first person to climb Antarctica's Mount Jackson.
  • He was the leader of the station on Adelaide Island from 1964 to 1965.
  • He also helped explore South Georgia in 1955 and 1956.

Where is Mount Cunningham Located?

Mount Cunningham is the 16th highest mountain peak in South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It is not part of the British Antarctic Territory.

It is located west of the Allardyce Range and northwest of the Esmark Glacier. There are several other mountains nearby:

  • Warburton Peak (1,089 meters)
  • Bomford Peak (1,141 meters)
  • Pyramid Peak (475 meters)
  • Smillie Peak (1,765 meters)
  • Stanley Peak (1,263 meters)
  • Comer Crag (634 meters)

These mountains are not connected to each other. However, Mount Cunningham is a high peak within a mountain range that stretches for about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers).

Mount Cunningham has steep cliffs that face the sea. It is found at the start of low, grassy hills near King Haakon Bay. This bay is an inlet on the southern coast. Cape Nunez is a headland directly to the south, and Jossac Bight is to the southeast.
