Mount Data is a tall mountain found in the Cordillera Central mountain range. It stands about 2,310 meters (7,579 feet) high. You can find it in the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines.

This mountain is located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Baguio. It sits right on the border between the provinces of Benguet and Mountain Province. The famous Halsema Highway runs along its side.

The mountain and the land around it became a national park in 1936. This means the area is protected to keep its nature safe. In 1940, the park grew even larger to cover about 5,513 hectares (13,620 acres). The mountain's slopes are covered with beautiful pine forests and mossy oak forests.

Mount Data is very important for water. It is the source of five major rivers: the Chico, Ahin, Siffu, Abra, and Amburayan rivers. The Agno River also starts here and flows through Benguet. This area acts like a giant sponge, collecting and supplying water to towns in Mountain Province, Benguet, and Ifugao.

The mountain is also known for a special event in history. In 1986, the Mount Data Peace Accord was signed here. This agreement helped bring peace between the Philippine government and a group called the Cordillera People's Liberation Army. It was a big step towards resolving conflicts in the region.

Amazing Animals of Mount Data

Mount Data is famous for its many different kinds of animals. Scientists have been interested in this area for a long time. It is a place with great biodiversity, meaning lots of different living things.

Early Discoveries

Back in 1895, a British explorer named John Whitehead collected many mammals and birds from the mountain. He gave his collection to the British Museum. A zoologist named Oldfield Thomas studied these animals. He found that many of them were new species, never seen before!

About 50 years later, another big group of small mammals was collected. This time, a Filipino biologist named Dioscoro S. Rabor led the expedition.

Unique Mammals and Birds

Among the animals found on Mount Data are some very special ones. These include the Carpomys melanurus, also known as the short-footed Luzon tree rat. Another unique mammal is the Carpomys phaeurus, or white-bellied Luzon tree rat. These are rare types of cloud rats.

There are also special birds, like the Collocalia whiteheadi, or Whitehead's swiftlet. This bird was first known from a single specimen caught during John Whitehead's trip to the mountain. The Carpomys melanurus was first discovered on Mount Data in 1896.
