Mount Hope is a diverse and hilly neighborhood in the city of San Diego, California. It is located in the southeastern part of the city. The neighborhood gets its name from the large Mount Hope Cemetery. This cemetery covers about 115 acres (0.47 square kilometers) of the community. Mount Hope has a mix of homes, businesses, factories, and cemetery areas.

History of Mount Hope

In 1869, a group of citizens decided to create a new public cemetery. This group was led by Alonzo Horton, a famous real estate developer in San Diego. They chose the name Mount Hope for the cemetery. It officially opened in 1871 at 3751 Market Street.

Inside the Mount Hope area, there is also a private cemetery called Greenwood Cemetery. The Cathedral Mausoleum was built within Greenwood Cemetery in 1919. It grew to become the largest single building mausoleum in the world.

Where is Mount Hope?

Mount Hope has clear boundaries that help you find it. State Route 94, also known as the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway, forms its northern edge. Interstate 805 is on the eastern side. Interstate 15 marks the western boundary. Imperial Avenue is the southern border. A main road in San Diego, Market Street, also runs through this community.

The current population breakdown shows that people of Hispanic/Latino heritage make up 77.0% of residents. African-Americans are 10.0%, and Asians are 7.2%. Non-Hispanic Whites make up 4.8%, and people of Mixed Race are 1.0%.
