Mount Livermore is a tall mountain in the Davis Mountains of Jeff Davis County, Texas. It stands at 8,378 feet (2,492 meters) high. This makes it the fourth highest mountain in Texas. It is also one of the most isolated peaks. This means it stands far away from other tall mountains.
The mountain was named after Major William Livermore. He was an officer in the U.S. Army's Engineer Corps. This group of soldiers helps build things and make maps. In 1884, Major Livermore led a team to map western Texas. He used the top of this mountain as a place to observe the land. He even placed a special marker there. When he first saw the bare, rocky top, he called it "Old Baldy." This name came from a general named "Baldy Smith." Because of this, Baldy Peak is another name for Mount Livermore.
What Is the Livermore Cache?
Mount Livermore is also known for an interesting discovery. It is called the Livermore Cache. A cache is a hidden collection of items. In 1895, two boys named Charles Janes and Tom Merrill found something special. They were exploring the mountain.
How Was the Cache Discovered?
The boys found a pile of stones, called a cairn, at the very top of the mountain. They decided to take the cairn apart. Underneath the stones, they found many arrowheads. These were pieces of arrows used by ancient people. Charles's mother, Susan Janes, was very interested in these finds. She was a person who studied old objects. She helped excavate, or carefully dig up, more arrow points and broken pieces.
