The mountain is named after William Lyon Mackenzie King. He was a very important person in Canadian history. Mackenzie King served as the tenth Prime Minister of Canada. This means he was the leader of the Canadian government. He passed away in 1950.

The mountain was officially given the name Mount Mackenzie King in 1962. Before that, it had a different name. In 1925, a climber named Don Munday called it "Hostility Mountain." This was after his climb to its summit. The name was changed to honor the former Prime Minister.
