Mount Majura is a small mountain located in the northern suburbs of Canberra, Australia. It stands at 890 metres (2,920 ft) high. Mount Majura is very close to Mount Ainslie and is the highest point within Canberra's city area. It is also part of the Canberra Nature Park.

Exploring Canberra Nature Park

Mount Majura is an important part of the Canberra Nature Park. It sits at the eastern edge of the suburb of Hackett, which is in the northeast of Canberra.

What's at the Top?

At the very top of Mount Majura, you'll find a special radar station. This station helps guide planes flying into and out of the nearby Canberra International Airport. It also has bright aircraft warning lights to make sure planes see the mountain, especially at night.

The station also holds important equipment for phone companies like Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone. There's even a repeater for the Canberra Amateur Radio Club, which helps amateur radio signals travel further.

Getting Around Mount Majura

Near the bottom of the mountain, on the Ainslie side, is an electricity substation for Canberra's northeast. A road goes up the mountain, mainly for the radar station, so it's not open to the public.

However, there are many popular walking trails that lead to the top from Ainslie and Hackett. If you love cycling, you'll find lots of single-track bicycle trails on the eastern side, in an area known as the Majura Pines.

Plants and Wildlife

The mountain is covered with native Australian trees, mostly eucalyptus trees. It's also home to many rare and sensitive plant species. You can find up to 26 different kinds of ground orchids here, which are very special!

A local group called the Friends of Mount Majura (FoMM) are volunteers who help take care of the park.

Other Hills in the Park

Canberra Nature Park includes other large hills too. These include Mount Taylor, Mount Ainslie, Mount Mugga Mugga, Mount Stromlo, and Black Mountain.

How Mount Majura Got Its Name

Mount Majura was named by Robert Campbell. He was one of the first big landowners in the area when people started settling there. It's thought that the mountain was named after a place in India.

Campbell spent a lot of his life as a merchant, trading goods between England, India, and Australia. Some people think Mount Majura is named after the Majura Gate in the city of Surat. However, this might not be correct because Campbell's company office in India was actually in the city of Kolkata.
