History of Transport and Storage
The Mount Russell Railway Station
A railway station was opened in Mount Russell on March 10, 1902. It was part of the Inverell branch line. Trains called railmotors used to travel along this line between Moree and Inverell.
However, this part of the railway line was closed down in 1987. Today, there isn't much left of the old station or its platform. Some of the railway sidings, which are short tracks used for parking trains, are still there.
Grain Silos at Mount Russell
The railway sidings at Mount Russell were also important for a large storage facility called a silo. This silo was built in 1934. It was used to store grain, like wheat, and could hold about 4,100 t (4,035 long tons; 4,519 short tons) of it.
Later, in 1955, even more storage was added, allowing the silo to hold an extra 28,500 t (28,050 long tons; 31,416 short tons) of grain. This silo was owned by a company called GrainCorp. By 2007, the silo was no longer being used for storage.
