History of Mount Tom Taylor
Mount Tom Taylor was named to honor a person who helped create Strathcona Provincial Park. His name was Thomas Taylor.
Who was Thomas Taylor?
Thomas Taylor (1865 - 1947) was a Canadian politician. A politician is someone who works in the government and helps make decisions for the public. As the Minister of Public Works, he was very important in getting money for roads and other developments in Strathcona Park.
In 1913, people hoped to build amazing scenic drives in the park. Sir Richard McBride, another important leader, also wanted the park to be fully developed. However, World War I started, and the government ran out of money. This stopped the big plans for the park's development.
Before becoming a minister, Thomas Taylor worked as a mineral broker, which means he helped buy and sell minerals. He was also a mining recorder, keeping official records about mining. He served as Minister of Public Works from 1908 to 1915. For some of that time, he also held a second job as Minister of Railways.
