Mount Yapeitso is a mountain located in the province of Quebec, Canada. It stands in a wild, unorganized area called Mont-Valin. This mountain is part of the Otish Mountains range. It is also found within the Le Fjord-du-Saguenay Regional County Municipality in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.
How Mount Yapeitso Got Its Name
The study of how places get their names is called toponymy. In 1949, a scientist named Jacques Rousseau explored the Otish Mountains. He called this area "the hydrographic hub of Quebec" because many rivers start there.
Rousseau wanted to name the mountains and lakes he found. He thought about naming Mount Yapeitso "Bignell Peak." This name would honor Frank Bignell, an assistant surveyor. Rousseau believed Frank Bignell was likely the first non-Indigenous person to climb the mountain. Frank's father, John Bignell, was also a famous surveyor.
However, Rousseau knew that the local Naskapi people, specifically the Nichicoun Amerindians, already had a name for the mountain. They called it "Mount Yapeitso." In their language, "yapeits" means "male caribou." Rousseau decided to use this Indigenous name for a nearby lake instead. This lake is now known as "Lake of the Ptarmigan."
Later, in 1971, the Quebec Place Names Commission decided to use the original Amerindian name for the mountain itself. They officially named it Mont Yapeitso. This name was recorded on November 18, 1971, in the Quebec Place Names Bank.
