Mountain Station is a train station in South Orange, New Jersey. It is part of the New Jersey Transit system. The station was built in 1915. About Mountain Station

Mountain Station is located in Essex County. It serves the Morris and Essex train lines. These lines were once part of the Erie Lackawanna Morristown Line.

Station Design and History

When the Lackawanna Railroad rebuilt the Morristown Line in the early 1900s, they changed many parts of the railway. They wanted to remove places where roads crossed the train tracks at the same level. This makes train travel safer.

However, Mountain Station was special. Its tracks stayed at the same height. Because of this, the Montrose Avenue road crossing was changed. The road was raised to go over the tracks on a bridge. Another road crossing, Mountain House Road, was removed completely. A path for people to walk was built there instead. This path was later removed in the 1970s.

How Trains Use the Station

Mountain Station has two platforms. One platform is for trains heading west. These trains go towards places like Dover or Hackettstown. The other platform is for trains heading east. These trains go towards Hoboken or New York City.

Most trains that stop at Mountain Station either start or end their journey in Hoboken. Some trains, called "Midtown Direct" trains, go straight to New York City. These trains usually do not stop at Mountain Station. However, you can still get to New York City from Mountain Station. You just need to switch trains at another station nearby, like the main station in South Orange. The South Orange station is less than a mile away.
