History of Mudchute Station
The first Mudchute DLR station was built on an old railway line. This line was called the Millwall Extension Railway. It was a very old train track from the Victorian era that hadn't been used for many years.
The First Station
The first Mudchute station was built high up, above the ground. It opened on 31 August 1987. This station was the very last stop on the DLR line before the end station at Island Gardens.
Rebuilding for a New Line
Later, the DLR line was extended. It went under the River Thames to a new end station at Lewisham. Because of this, the Mudchute station had to be rebuilt. The new station was built in a shallow trench, closer to where the trains go into the tunnel under the river. This new and improved station opened on 20 November 1999.
Recent Upgrades
In April 2008, more work began at the station. Workers started to change an old side track into a third platform. This new platform helps trains turn around. They also added a roof, called a canopy, over the station. All these improvements were finished by October 2009.
