Rear-Admiral Mujeeb Ahmad Khan Lodhi (1922 – before October 2018), known as M.A.K. Lodhi, was an important two-star admiral in the Pakistan Navy. He was also a writer and a defence expert. He is remembered for leading the Western Naval Command during the 1971 war with India. After his time in the navy, he wrote a book called Ocean Rift: Memoirs of Admiral Lodhi in 2017, sharing his experiences from the 1971 war.

Who Was M.A.K. Lodhi?

Mujeeb Ahmad Khan Lodhi was born in 1922 in British India. He joined the Royal Indian Navy in 1941. He took part in World War II.

When India and Pakistan became separate countries in 1947, Lodhi chose to join the new Pakistan Navy. He was one of only twenty officers from the Royal Indian Navy who made this choice. At that time, he held the rank of Lieutenant.

His Role in Wars

Lodhi played an important part in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 against India. He was a commanding officer in a special group of ships. This group carried out a surprise attack on Dwarka in India.

During this war, Captain Lodhi was in charge of the ship PNS Babur. His job was to protect the area. Under his command, the PNS Babur fired at the lighthouse radars and returned safely. He continued to command the Babur until 1967.

In 1969, Lodhi, now a Commodore, was sent to East Pakistan. He became the administrator for the Chittagong Port. He was responsible for managing the port's boundaries. In 1970, he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral. He then became the fleet commander for the Western Naval Command.

The 1971 War

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Rear-Admiral Lodhi led the Western Naval Command's special task group. This group included one cruiser, five destroyers, two frigates, four submarines, and one oiler. He also sent Pakistan's only long-range submarine, Ghazi, to help. He appointed Commodore H.H. Ahmed as his chief of staff.

Life After the Navy

After the 1971 war ended and Bangladesh became an independent country, Rear-Admiral Lodhi was among the senior officers who were retired from service. He was retired in April 1972.

After leaving the Pakistan Navy, Rear-Admiral Lodhi worked as a military adviser for the Royal Saudi Navy. He stayed with them for some time. From 2015, he started writing columns for the newspaper The News International. In his columns, he shared his thoughts on defence and security topics.

In 2017, Lodhi's book, Ocean Rift: Memoirs of Admiral Lodhi, was published. He passed away before October 2018.
