Mulyadi Tamsir (born 8 April 1981 – died 9 January 2021) was an Indonesian student leader and politician. He was known for being the chairman of the Muslim Students' Association from 2015 to 2018. Later, he joined the People's Conscience Party, a political group in Indonesia.

Early Life and Education

Mulyadi Tamsir was born on 8 April 1981 in Lampung, Indonesia. When he was four years old, his family moved to Sintang Regency in West Kalimantan. He finished elementary school in 1993, junior high in 1996, and a business vocational school in 1999.

After vocational school, Mulyadi couldn't go straight to university because he didn't have enough money. He worked for about two years to save up. Then, he was able to attend the Social and Political Faculty at Kapuas University, where he studied for six years and graduated in 2007. He later earned a Bachelor of Economics degree in 2009 from the Indonesian Economic Institute in Malang. In 2011, he continued his studies at Trisakti University to get a higher degree in economics.

Leading the Muslim Students' Association

Mulyadi joined the Muslim Students' Association (HMI) in October 2001 while he was at Kapuas University. This group helps students grow and get involved in their communities.

Rising Through the Ranks

Just two years after joining, Mulyadi was put in charge of guiding new members at his university. He then became the chairman of the HMI branch in Sintang. Between 2005 and 2013, he took on many different leadership roles within the association, both locally and across the province. By 2013, he became the secretary general of the entire organization. In this role, Mulyadi often took part in protests that spoke out against government decisions, like when fuel prices went up.

Chairman of HMI

On 5 December 2015, Mulyadi was chosen as the chairman of the Muslim Students' Association. He won the election with 224 votes. He served as chairman until his term ended on 30 March 2018.

During his time as chairman, a large protest happened in Jakarta in November 2016. HMI was one of the groups involved. When the protest became violent, some HMI members were arrested. The police questioned Mulyadi because he was the leader of the organization. Mulyadi defended his group, saying they were innocent and that the arrests were not fair. He also said that unknown students were responsible for the violence. He set up a legal team to help the arrested members. The police later released the HMI members on 17 November. Mulyadi stated that HMI was an "independent and idealist" group, meaning it was not controlled by political parties.

In March 2017, a photo of Mulyadi wearing a shirt with "Anies-Sandi" (names of political candidates) and the HMI logo became popular online. Some HMI branches were upset, saying Mulyadi was taking sides in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. They believed this went against HMI's rules about staying neutral in politics.

In the People's Conscience Party

After his term as HMI chairman ended in 2018, Mulyadi joined the People's Conscience Party. He became the Deputy Treasurer of the party. He helped organize meetings for people running for office in the 2019 elections. Mulyadi himself ran for a seat in the People's Representative Council but did not win. After the election, he became the chairman for organization affairs within the party.

Personal Life

Mulyadi Tamsir married Makrufatul Yeti Srianingsih on 20 November 2020.

Death

Sadly, Mulyadi, his wife, his parent-in-law, and one child died on 9 January 2021. They were on board Sriwijaya Air Flight 182, which crashed into the sea near Thousand Islands. His body was identified on 19 January 2021 and given to his family a day later. He was buried in a public cemetery on 21 January 2021. Many HMI members and government officials, including Bahlil Lahadalia and Anies Baswedan, attended a special prayer for him at the HMI headquarters.
