A Look at Mumford's History
Mumford is located on the eastern side of the Brazos River. The community is named after an early settler, Jesse Mumford. He started a ferry service across the Brazos River in 1855. This ferry helped people and goods cross the river.
A post office opened in Mumford in 1878. The community grew steadily through the late 1800s. By 1893, Mumford had many businesses. These included two saloons, two barbershops, and two drugstores.
In 1895, the first iron bridge was built near Mumford. This bridge crossed the Brazos River. It connected Robertson and Burleson counties. At that time, Mumford's population was around 550 people.
However, a big flood in 1899 caused a lot of damage. Most of the community was destroyed. Mumford never fully recovered its size or wealth after this flood. Today, some businesses are still there. The community also has a post office, which is in the old General Store. There's also an elementary and high school, known as the Mumford Independent School District Mustangs. A cemetery is also part of the community.
