Munain facts for kids
Munain is a small village in Alava, Spain. It is located on the plains of Alava, in a southern area called Ordoñana. Munain sits 617 meters (about 2,024 feet) above sea level. For a long time, people in Munain mostly spoke Basque. But now, Spanish is the most common language spoken there.
How Many People Live in Munain?
A long time ago, before the 1200s, only about ten people lived in Munain. Unlike some other villages nearby, Munain's population actually grew during the Middle Ages. By the 1700s, the village had grown to 129 people. Munain's population stayed about the same through the 1900s. However, in the 2000s, the number of people living there became much smaller.

Munain's Church
The church in Munain was built in 1544 by Ramiro de Okariz. It is a rectangular building with a straight front part. Inside, it has two special areas covered with arched ceilings.
The church also has a tall, strong tower with four levels. The first level is a portico, which is like a covered porch at the entrance. The top level is a belfry, where bells are kept.
Inside the church, there is a special room called the Chapel of the Bicuñas. Here, you can find statues of holy doctors and evangelists. The church also has a beautiful altarpiece from the early 1600s. It features sculptures of San Pedro and San Pablo on each side.
Ancient Oak Trees
The area around Munain and Okariz is famous for its many very old and large oak trees. The people of the town have allowed these oaks to grow big. Sometimes, they used the wood from these trees for fuel or to make charcoal. Experts from the United Kingdom have even visited to study these special trees.
The forest in the Munain-Okariz region covers 385 hectares (about 951 acres). Of this, 213 hectares are in Munain and 171 hectares are in Okariz. This forest is a protected natural area. It is also known as a "Place of Community Interest" because of its importance. The forest is located near where the Zadorra River begins.
